Metacognition is the process of thinking about thinking or learning how to learn. A teacher can be trained in Metacognitive thinking, and can achieve excellence through practice and reflection. The leading countries in school education have metacognitive teaching at the heart of their systems.
There are three main aspects to metacognition.
Metacognitive Skills
The purpose of education is to instil ten metacognitive skills in pupils which will make them life long learners.
Habits of Mind
Targeted lesson plans along with continuous practice, develop habits of mind in pupils and the sum total of these habits of mind is intelligence.
Pedagogies
Deploy appropriate learning methods among pupils, based on their learning styles, which contribute to developing habits of mind relevant for a particular subject.
